Program Description

Focus Area Age Group
Whole School Reform. The Modern Red Schoolhouse (MRSh) seeks to build high-performing schools that are standards-driven, by developing the capacity of teachers and principals in two core areas:

(1) Professional Judgement- using data instructionally, understanding and applying best practice, developing coherent instructional design, and sustaining positive school climate.

(2) Participative Management- building a culture of exchange and collaboration, setting priorities that leverage the school's resources, developing long and short range improvement plans, and managing effective meetings.

Research Description

Outcomes where Tests of Significance were not Reported
  • In a longitudinal study by Peevely and Henson, prior to MRSh intervention the percent of students passing the state test (SAT-9) was, on average 3.3% below the district average. After one year of MRSh implementation, that figure had risen to 6.59% above the district average.
  • In the Peevely & Henson study, students in grades 3 and 5 maintained the most consistent year to year gains in statewide assessments.
  • In a longitudinal analysis at Rozelle Elementary School, after 4 years of MRSh implementation, the mean percentile scores on the TCAP achievement test exceeded the state mean, a gain of 6.5% from the 1st year of implementation. MRSh students also achieved gain scores at a higher rate than comparison students on the state assessments (TVAAS).

Research Category 1 Large scale, externally reviewed research.
