KIPP is a model academy for publicly funded charter and contract schools. It adheres to many of the principles of school improvement/reform. At present, evaluation has been conducted only in Grade 5 and in 3 states. Upper elementary and middle school students.
     

Research Description

Outcomes
  • In 3 KIPP academies (Washington, DC; Gaston, NC; and Houston, TX), students in Grade 5 made significant academic gains in reading and math (NCE points), when compared to their pretest scores.
  • In Gaston, NC, 82% of students with special needs passed the state reading test in Grade 5. Only 11% had passed the state reading test in Grade 4, while attending other schools.
  • In Houston, TX, the average 3D Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) passing rate in reading and math, was higher for KIPP students than the average Houston Independent School District passing rate.
  • In Washington, DC, students in KIPP made greater mean gains in reading and math assessments than the national norm.
