The Program Safe, Sound, and Healthy is a comprehensive, integrated health education program designed to give students the skills and information to make responsible choices concerning their personal well-being. The program aims to establish an atmosphere of "wellness" in the schools. The development of a climate of "wellness" is fostered by involving departments such as school lunch, custodial services, and the health office as part of the total health program. The comprehensive program also includes activities for the staff and students, such as organized exercise programs, stress workshops, and the implementation of a nutrition policy. Safe, Sound, and Healthy requires a curriculum writing team to correlate the health objectives to the basic skills curriculum and provide in-service training. It requires the involvement of a health specialist and a psychologist to present specific units. It is facilitated by an advisory team providing support and guidance to the program. The classroom teacher is oriented through in-service education and a variety of resources are involved in implementation. These resources are marshaled through the health curriculum team, the health advisory team, and interagency cooperation. Professional Development Program directors and representatives from the curriculum writing team and the advisory team are available to provide assistance in implementing the program. Turn-key training for staff is provided. One day of follow-up is also available. Costs & Funding Options The primary cost for implementing Safe, Sound, and Healthy would include training fees for a team of teachers and program coordinator. The program can be adapted with any health-related program currently available in the replicating district. |
