Comprehensive School Improvement Planning

Measurable improve-ment has been extensively documented in the following areas:
  • Student achievement, morale, discipline, and expectations;
  • Teacher planning, clearly defined curriculum, monitoring student progress, teacher/ staff effectiveness, and leadership; and
  • Parent/community involvement, student responsibility, and rewards and incentives.
 

The Program

Comprehensive School Improvement Planning (CSIP) is a collaborative planning process providing a means to site-based management. Initiated in the belief that authority may bring a degree of compliance, but only commitment can bring excellence, CSIP is designed to improve the equity and excellence in education.

School improvement teams, comprised of the principal, representative staff, and, when possible, parents, community members, and secondary students, are organized and a systematic, ongoing improvement process is established. Program features include:

  • data driven improvement plans and activities;
  • desegregated student achievement by gender, socioeconomic background, etc.;
  • extensive use of "Effective Schools" correlates administered to staff, parents, and secondary students; and
  • other assessment instruments available for community, curriculum, and support programs; substance abuse education; and HIV/AIDS education.

    Professional Development

    The School Improvement Team of the replicating site must commit to 2 days of training plus one follow-up day. Training is available regionally:

    Costs and Funding Options

    CSIP may be adopted by individual schools or a consortia of schools. Replication costs vary depending on the amount of needs assessments and surveys used, travel expenses, etc. Possible funding sources for replication include ESEA Title I and ESEA Title VI.

The program provides a process for developing a plan to address the learning standards.
